Mr. Andrus's "Why"

"Come back to my middle school years, where my "why" began to form. Growing up, I didn't really fit into a mold. Being average in many aspects of life made my ability to thrive fall short. Not to mention bullying, self-doubt, and living in unfavorable conditions can wear down on a child. When I reached seventh grade, I was diagnosed with a genetic heart defect that removed all sport activities from my school schedule. At the time, I felt a relief. I didn't have to trudge through being the perpetual last pick for dodgeball, so to speak. As a result, I was forced into the arts. I was removed from athletics and P.E. classes and placed in art and theater. Alongside this, I had already begun playing an instrument. Little did I know my future was set in motion. Through high school, I became a leader in band and was given the responsibility to teach younger students. I came to the realization that I wanted to be a band director.

Students walk the halls of schools longing for a place to belong. A place where they no longer have to feel basic or lackluster. A place they can call home. As a band director, I want to provide direction for those who stumble in the arts. I want them to find a place that is safe to open up, that challenges them, and that opens their eyes to their potential. I desire to be a light for my students each day. Select teachers poured into my empty cup when I was a child. It is now my duty to do the same."

Mr. Cordova's "Why"

"Ever since I started my band journey in sixth grade, I have been blessed with many things. Through band, I have met many amazing and talented people, some of whom I consider lifelong friends. It was from some of these people that I got to experience things and explore places I never even dreamed of.. For example, had it not been for my band colleagues at UTEP, I never would have been a part of The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, getting to perform in numerous locations and events, including the Super Bowl in 2015. It was my journey in band that has taught me lessons that I still live by to this day, all which can be summed up by this quote: “The Effort is the Prize.”

I have always had a love for music, and this journey inspired me to go into the teaching profession. However, my main goal in teaching is not to teach students to go to college, study music, and be the #1 best player on their instrument (though that would be a great bonus). Instead, I hope to teach them to always give their best effort, both in band and outside of band, and to provide them with opportunities to have similar experiences that I had. Whether they continue music or not, the friendships made, life lessons learned, and the experiences made are what I want them to take with them in life."
